Survey on Awareness and Perception of mRNA-based Therapeutics in Regenerative Medicine

Image
By: Zobiya Ameen Introduction Since the discovery of mRNA 3 decades ago, and with extensive research, it has gained popularity in the scientific community after the successful application of mRNA Vaccines for the COVID-19 Pandemic. mRNA, also known as messenger RNA, is a molecule that holds the instructions or protocol that tells the cells to use their natural machinery to build a protein.   The current emphasis in regenerative medicine is on mRNA technology, which utilizes cellular programming and genetic manipulation to address degenerative diseases and facilitate tissue regeneration (Chabanovska et al., 2021). In Regenerative medicine, Significant advances made to harness stem cells’ therapeutic ability and their intrinsic regenerating capacity upon tissue damage. Their ability to trans-differentiate and the potential for indefinite cell division is an asset (Mahla, 2016).   It complements the mRNA-based manipulation of somatic cells by editing, replacing, adding, o...

Assessing Public Awareness About Gene Drive Technology in Mosquetoes to Prevent Malaria

Image
By: Narmeen Maqsood GENE DRIVE TECHNOLOGY OF MOSQUITO TO PREVENT MALARIA : Gene drives are selfish genetic elements that can be re-designed to invade a population, and they hold tremendous potential for the control of mosquitoes that transmit disease. Much progress has been made recently in demonstrating proof of principle for gene drives able to suppress populations of malarial mosquitoes or to make them refractory to the Plasmodium parasites they transmit. Gene drives that are designed to spread and impose a suppressive effect on either the mosquito or the parasite it transmits are expected eventually, like any intervention, to select for resistance in each organism, respectively. (Nolan.,2020) Gene-drive-modified mosquitoes hold promise as new tools for the control and elimination of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. GDMMs aim to achieve area-wide control with characteristics that differ substantially from current insecticide-based mosquito control methods, rais...

Public Perception of Human Enhancement Technologies

Image
Introduction Throughout the history of scientific research, the goal has always been to enhance human capabilities beyond natural limitations. Technology has allowed us to make our lives better through personalized medications, gene editing, Aesthetic surgery, neural implants, bionic prosthetics, and the Human-Machine interface. With advanced studies in biomedical engineering, pharmaceuticals, neurotechnology, and nanotechnology, there is the potential to create a future where we can cure physical abnormalities or intervene for aesthetic purposes. Wearable biosensors, for instance, can help athletes improve their performance, wearable biosensors can measure fluctuating insulin levels for diabetic patients, and augmented reality glasses can assist medical professionals in surgical simulations. Cognitive implants, which are non-invasive tech implanted in the brain, can improve memory and cognitive abilities. Micro-chipping for wireless transactions, without the need of phone or car...
